Clinical Dermatology
What is Acne?
Acne is a common skin disorder consisting of small, or comedonal, bumps and larger, often tender, inflamed bumps. Although acne occurs commonly amongst teenagers, it can affect people of all ages. Acne most commonly affects the face, shoulders, chest, and back.

A person’s likelihood of experiencing acne is largely dependent upon whether they have a family history of acne. However, certain lifestyle factors, such as stress, sleep habits, and hormonal changes, can significantly increase the oil production in one’s skin. It is this excessive oil production, amongst other things, that can lead to acne.

Available Treatments
In additional to excessive oil production, clogged pores also contribute to acne formation. Occasionally, bacterial overgrowth also plays a role. Treatment of acne is aimed at reducing the influence of each of these factors. Washing regularly, sometimes with exfoliating cleansers, can help to unclog pores. Oral or topical antibiotics reduce bacterial overgrowth and hormonal therapies target excessive oil production. There is increasing evidence that diet modification can positively affect acne.

Eczema & Dry Skin
What is Eczema?
Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a condition characterized by skin that is prone to extreme itchiness. When scratched, rubbed or irritated, the skin becomes even more itchy, dry, and scaly. For this reason, eczema is also known as “the itch that rashes.” Excessive scratching or rubbing can sometimes lead to bacterial infections of the skin.

Available Treatments
Treatments focus on controlling acute flares and preventing significant future outbreaks. Flares can be controlled with usage of either an oral or a topical steroid medication. Antibiotics may be used if there is evidence of over production of skin bacteria. The daily application of hypo-allergenic moisturizers are the mainstay of chronic therapy in order to prevent major flares.

What is a Rash?
The term “rash” refers to a visible change in the appearance of your skin, such as with bug bites, poison oak, or hives. Rashes can be acute or chronic. They can persist for several weeks to months or they can be intermittent, fading and re-emerging with various triggers. Rashes can present as minor inconveniences to patients or they can be a harbinger of more worrisome internal medical conditions.

Available Treatments
While most rashes are not serious, your dermatologist should further evaluate those that do not improve or that are associated with other symptoms, such as severe itching, fever, or joint pain. Treatments might include creams or oral medications to relieve your symptoms. Additional tests to determine the cause of the rash may also be ordered by your dermatologist.

Mole Evaluation
What is a mole?
Moles are pigmented lesions on patients’ skin. People can be born with moles or acquire them over their life. Most moles are acquired in childhood or early adulthood, but occasionally moles can develop later in life. When moles are “small round and brown,” they are usually benign. Moles that are irregular in size, shape or color, or that suddenly change, are more worrisome and should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

Why should I get a mole evaluation?
In addition to the moles that you show your dermatologist, he or she may note other moles that require additional observation. Worrisome or changing moles may be suggestive of a type of skin cancer called melanoma. Effectively managing normal or atypical moles is a team effort between the patient and the doctor.

Cosmetic Dermatology
What is Botox?
Botox is a brand of medications known as botulinum toxins. Other brands include Dysport and Xeomin. Botulinum toxin, despite its negative connotation, has many important medical uses. In cosmetic dermatology it is used to temporarily relax frown lines and lines of facial expression. Botox injections, particularly of the forehead and eye area, are among the safest and most reliable way to relax the fine lines and wrinkles on a patient’s face.

Benefits of Botox
The goals of Botox injections are to produce noticeable results, which also appear natural and aesthetically pleasing. Indeed many patients remark how their friends, spouses and co-workers note how well-rested and refreshed they appear, without ever expecting that a cosmetic procedure had been performed.

What are Fillers?
Dermal fillers, or sometimes just “fillers,” are substances that are injected into the deep lines in patients’ skin for the purpose of reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Many of these products contain Hyaluronic acid, a soft and natural gel-like substance which is easily injected into areas of volume loss. Products like Juviderm and Restylane exemplify this type of filler. Other fillers such as Voluma, Radiesse, Perlane and Sculptra are used for more severe areas of voluma loss.

Benefits of Fillers
Fillers are injected into the soft-tissue areas of the face to replace volume that is loss with the aging process. Filling these lines results in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, a lifting of the skin, and the creation of a softer appearance in the cheeks. Filler can be used underneath the eye, in the cheeks, around the mouth and in the lips.

What is a CoolSculpting?
A clinically proven, non-invasive procedure to selectively and reliably reduce fat in problem areas, CoolSculpting® utilizes groundbreaking science discovered by two Harvard scientists called cryolipolysis. Their initial findings demonstrated that fat cells are more vulnerable to the effects of cold than surrounding tissue. Continued studies proved that when fat cells are exposed to precisely controlled cooling for a sustained period of time, they undergo a gradual reduction and eventual cell death. The destroyed fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body. FDA approved, CoolSculpting® is a safe, effective procedure which results in an undeniable reduction of fat in areas that may be resistant to diet and exercise.
